I want you to be aware of the newest scam- Home title theft
Home title theft is a form of real estate fraud where someone forges a homeowner's deed using their personal information to steal the property. The thief might take out a home equity loan or line of credit in the homeowner's name and then default on payments, risking foreclosure and damaging the homeowner's credit. For unoccupied homes, fraudsters might sell or rent out the property without the owner's knowledge.
Home title theft is less common than other identity theft forms but still poses risks, especially for those with significant home equity, multiple properties, or unoccupied homes. Seniors and those who neglect their financial records are particularly vulnerable. Warning signs include unexpected bills, credit denials, IRS notices, debt collection calls, or discovering unauthorized rental or sale of their property.
HOW TO PROTECT YOURSELF FROM TITLE FRAUD:
Monitor Mail: Watch for missing bills or important documents.
Check Credit Reports: Regularly review credit reports for suspicious activity.
Safeguard Personal Information: Shred sensitive documents and be cautious online.
Watch Property Activity: Report suspicious behavior and consider a security system.
Get Title Insurance: Purchase owner's title insurance to protect against claims or liens.
Thanks, Dennis
